Social Media Consultant?

Hi, my name is Greg, and I am a Social Media Consultant. Really? Sure, why not. I maintained all the social media for iBeanInspired from January through early May as an intern. I learned a lot in that time. I also just finished up a certificate program in Integrated Marketing Communications at the University of Utah. And just a couple of weeks ago I had a consulting session with the director of Wasatch Community Gardens, and her PR staffer about the use of their social media outlets. Does this make me an expert? Absolutely not. But with my limited knowledge I still know enough to make suggestions about what a non-profit can do to increase their traffic. Will my suggestions make a difference? Perhaps. I think a lot of it has to do with your audience also. Do you think a funeral director is going to drum up a lot of business on Facebook?

Every day I find something new about social media and what it can do for your business. There is this huge area of marketing that I have very little experience in, and look forward to learning, but I don't know anything. The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know. That, however, isn't really the point of why I decided to write today. Well, let me tell you this. I do spend a chunk of any day reading blogs, following so-called social media experts on Twitter, and wading through all the garbage on Facebook. I wish all this new media stuff wasn't so interesting to me. And the stuff I do find is just scratching the surface.
There are plenty of self proclaimed social media consultants or gurus or experts out there. I don't claim to be one. But I am willing to share my knowledge with anyone who wants it. I guess the main point of this is to say, there are "experts" galore out there, if you have need for a social media consultant make sure they really know what they are doing before you pay them anything or give them access to all of your information. Make sense?

Call this the first post in my musings on social media. I spend a fair amount of time wading through the "new" mass media. This is just the beginning.
